I was trying out a new brand of paintball shoe from Inov8, and the mesh on the lowtop sneakers kept my feet cool throughout the game, while the rubber bottoms really dug into the paintslicked Castle floor. I also put one of the new Hammerhead MoFo carbon fiber barrels on the marker I borrowed from a friend I was traveling light this trip.
As the defending teams gathered in the castle you could feel the energy from all the players waiting for the time to go. The whistle blew and the paint started to fly. As a defender rushing in and out of the castle walls, you hear the attackers paint coming full speed. I remember slamming against the walls to dodge enemy fire and seeing some of my less fortunate teammates covered from head to toe, just because they ran into the wrong place at the right time for the attackers to get a shot—or ten—on them.
Greg Red Hastings, and Misdirected Hostilities worked hard defending the West side wall with the help of Able Company Immortals. it was so hard to see from all the spray of paint coming of the bunkers, Hastings said. They had five guys stacked up, lying on the ground shooting in different lanes at the main entrance out of the west wall.
We all ran along the top of the wall taking down attackers as they tried to get closer. There were many times you would run out of paint or air before you would ever get hit. I remember running out of paint and, frustrated, I walked back to the dead zone getting hit from so many people coming up the side of the hill.
But no matter how hard the attackers pushed they couldn’t penetrate the West wall! We just didn’t let them in. The defenders on the other sides had equal success, pushing the Attackers out every time they got close. When the Attackers did penetrate a wall, with the corner between walls three and four going down first, the Defenders pushed them out before they good do much damage. With experienced Defenders, a strong plan and paint that shot great, the Defenders held the Castle for four long hours to win it.
Next up, for both me and Hastings, along with Smart Parts’ Sean Scott leading the Smart Corps is SuperGame XXXVII at SniperzDen Paintball in St. Paul, Oregon on May 1 - 3. The game is produced by Warpaint International and promises a weekend of fun with camping available, a player’s feast, and two days and one night of Big Game fun.
